What is the robots.txt?

Search engines like Google play a major role in search engine optimization. They are the ones that dictate if your website deserves to get a lot of traffic and thereby if you will be able to get more website visitors and potential clients. This implies that when search engines visit your web pages to index your contents, then that is a great news.

However, on the flip side, it is not all the time that you want to get your contents be indexed by search engines. For example, if your web pages have two different versions- a version for viewing and a version for printing, then you do not want the web crawlers to access both or you will get penalized for posting duplicate contents. Similarly, if your website contains some sensitive information, then you do not want search engines or web crawlers to gain access to these specific pages. But the thing is, protecting sensitive information in your web pages can be done by keeping them in a separate device.

Likewise, if you want to save bandwidth through exclusion of JavaScript, stylesheets, and images from indexing, then you also have to keep these portions away from getting indexed by search engines.

One simple way to do the things mentioned above is to use robots metatag. This is a way of telling search engines which folders and files in your web site they should avoid indexing. However, the problem with this approach is that robots metatag can go unnoticed by search engines. But there is actually an alternative and a better way than using the robots metatag – the robots.txt which can be generated using a robots.txt generator.

The robots.txt is basically text file that you anchor into your site in order to tell the search engines which pages in your website they can and cannot visit. But it is important for you to note that the robots.txt is not an html file. Also, a robots.txt file is not a required file to be put into your site. But somehow, search engines obey the things that websites tell them not to do.

Another important note to keep in mind is that a robots.txt file is not something that you can use to prevent search engines from going into your website. You cannot prevent web crawlers from visiting your site with just the robots.txt file. It does not act like a barrier or a firewall. It simply is just like informing the web crawlers which doors they can open and which one they cannot. So if you want to protect sensitive information contained within your website, then it is not smart to rely only on the robots.txt file.

But the sure thing is that a robots.txt text file is very useful. So if you want to create one but you cannot do so yourself because it would require a lot of learning, then just use a robots.txt generator instead.
